Ghanaian students studying in Serbia facing hardships due to delayed stipends

Ghanaian students who are studying in academic programs in Serbia are facing significant challenges due to delayed stipend payments

Some students have not received their stipends since arriving in the country.

The situation has become critical, with many students facing the possibility of being expelled from their academic pursuits.

This is due to growing financial constraints and administrative barriers.

Reports reveal that the students are being forced to seek alternative means to finance their living expenses.

Some students rely heavily on loans or low-paying jobs.

Abdul Salam Mohammed, a Ghanaian student in Serbia, narrating his ordeal said "We came in May [2023] and we haven’t received our stipends since last year, so it’s almost been 11 months. Even though we’ve had constant engagement with the Secretariat, nothing has been done about it and this has been a challenge for us. Many of us are adapting by doing a lot of menial jobs here and there which is also affecting our academics.

Another student who spoke on anonymity to Citi News said "I arrived in Serbia last year and the main challenge here is with finances. We struggle to cater to many of our needs here and this affects our studies, which is the main reason why we’re in this country. We borrow money from our country mates and people from other African countries to feed ourselves. Even moving to the main campus for lectures is by bus and if we don’t have money to do that, how do we learn."

The current situation has caused deep psychological anguish among the affected students, in addition to the immediate financial impact.

Urgent pleas have been made to the Ghanaian government to take decisive action and ease the difficulties encountered by its citizens studying overseas.

Increase in cocoa prices is a rip-off of hardworking farmers — Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Mahama, has said the government's just-announced increase in the farm-gate price of cocoa is a rip-off of the hardworking cocoa farmers and their families who continue to sustain their economy through their toil. Mahama in a Facebook post argued that given the international market price of cocoa reaching a 46-year record high of $3,600, the government should have provided cocoa farmers with a more equitable share of the international FOB price. He expressed disappointment that the government has chosen to offer farmers a mere GH¢1,308 per bag, which constitutes only 52.7% of the FOB price on the international market. Over the weekend, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced an increase in the farmgate price for cocoa beans. Addressing farmers at the opening of the 2023/2024 cocoa season in Tepa, Ashanti region, Nana Addo said the price per bag has been raised from the previous GH¢800 to GH¢1,308. This represents abou

Jailing Cecilia Dapaah over $1m stolen money will send a clear signal to others — Afaglo

Novihoho Afaglo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Marrer Ghana Limited and Susatgad Boat Building and Fishing Industries, has added his voice to the news of the immediate-past Sanitation Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah for allegedly stashing huge sums of illegal monies at home. He has called on the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to investigate her source of income. In a Twitter post, he stated that the Ghanaian authorities using Cecilia Dapaah as an example to face the law and subsequently jailed will send a clear signal to others adding that failure to do so will "sanction others to feel that it's ok to do same and get away with it." Dapaah submitted her resignation letter to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Saturday, July 22, 2023, in response to a story about a theft case at her home in Abelemkpe, a suburb of Accra.
